Draconic Power at Your Feet

These red-scaled heavy boots have an intricate wing pattern designed on the ankles. They are surprisingly lightweight and keep your feet warm even in the coldest climates.

Dragon Glide: Bonus Action. The wings on the boots open and let you glide. You gain a flying speed of 15ft until the end of your turn. You must end your turn touching the ground.

Fire Step: Action. Fire columns erupt from the ground as you step on it. When you take this action you can move through the space of other creatures. When you end your movement, fire columns, 10ft high, erupt from the ground you touched with the booths and they last until the end of your next turn. Creatures that start their turn in the columns or move into them must DEX15 or take 4d6 fire damage, half on a success.

Hot Steps

Every player at some point wants either to have a pet dragon, or play one. It’s in the name of the game and the reason why Dragonkin player species exist! Us DMs usually are more eager to put cool dragons behind the screen, as powerful threats for our own worlds. These Boots can meet the expectations of everyone at the table.

The Dragon Glide ability gives players a cool trick, without all the problems that come with a character flying around. 15ft, or generally half your normal movement, is an optimal length that makes this ability useful when overcoming small obstacles but doesn’t let you avoid every threat from melee.

The second ability could easily have been a threatening Dragon Breath, but these are shoes! The idea of leaving a Wall of Fire in your path is not only really cool, but could also make movement an important component in your player’s strategy. If your combats are a little too static, this is something that will literally make Movement Hot.

Hooks

There’s two major ways dragon scale items are made: either you have formed an ancient and epic alliance between mortals and these mighty magical creatures, or, more simply, you killed the beast and now want cool shoes. Here are some possible Hooks:

d6Hook
1After proving their worth, Lysaxtrix, the Crimson Queen, donates some of her scales to the characters, hoping they can slay the menace.
2Red Dragon Scales can be used to make items only by the Mysterious Smiths of Highstar, the shining city on top of a holy mountain.
3These boots are the only thing that remains not carbonized of the fabled hero that faced the Red Menace.
4The villain wears these boots with pride and a smirk on her face, she had them made out of the scales of the party’s Dragon Ally.
5To become a Dragon Knight and ride your own dragon you have to inherit these boots from a retired master.
6The Red Boots are kept as a prize in the Loot Pile of Kalisaxia, the Green Terror. This dragon has terrorized the locals and killed the previous Dragon that protected this land.

Variations

You were already thinking about it. Dragon scales, why do they have to be Red? Let’s go elemental:
